Michael Madyira

Journalist

I’m a sports journalist specialising in African football and the Premier Soccer League. I cover domestic leagues, transfers, national team stories and continental competitions.

An avid fan of Manchester United, growing up I dreamt of becoming a professional footballer, but that dream died after enrolling at journalism school. Admittedly, I wasn’t that good in my attempt to bend them like David Beckam.

Having started my career as an all-rounder, also covering cricket, rugby and tennis, I was a panel member of the 2013/14 International Cricket Council Awards Voting Academy.

But my heart has always been with football, a game that I narrowed on.

In my stories, I bring the vantage point of someone who nearly played the game, which gives me a first-hand feel for players’ ambitions, emotions and setbacks. That also gives me a deep understanding of the game, from tactics on the pitch to administrative issues.
