Ex-Chiefs striker throws in the towel in Zimbabwe

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Luke Petros has thrown in the towel by accepting that he has dismally failed to preserve WhaWha’s Premier Soccer League status in Zimbabwe.

Six games remain before the Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier Soccer league ends. Petros is the first to admit that his chances of saving the correctional services side from demotion are minimal.

His sentiments came after their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Chicken Inn on Saturday.

“It’s now becoming a tall order for us to survive relegation if you look at the number of games remaining. It’s painful to accept, but it is what it is. I feel that I have failed my team, and myself.

“It’s becoming increasingly difficult for us to survive relegation. We have remained at the bottom of the league since it started. It’s painful.

“I don’t know if it’s bad luck because we never managed to record two consecutive wins. It has either been a win followed by a loss or a draw and a loss. That has been the story,” Petros said.

The former Zimbabwe international admits that the poor results and below-par performances have left him out of depth.

“I have tried everything, but nothing gave us the results. I changed squads time and again, but results have not been coming,” he added.

“Rotation gave everyone a chance to show what they have to offer in our bid to survive, but it hasn’t worked.

“At the moment, we are playing with our eyes on how others play. But it isn’t easy to imagine results going in our favour. Our preferred destiny is no longer in our hands.”

In 28 games, Petros’ side have 20 points on their tally, having won five times and settled for draws on five occasions.

And they remain in 18th position on the log table as the league enters the homestretch.

Meanwhile, ex-Chippa United coach Norman Mapeza remains on course in his bid to complete a double with FC Platinum.

FC Platinum remains on top of the standing in Zimbabwe with 61 points on their tally, and they could seal the championship if they win the next four games.
