Gavin Hunt gives update on Liverpool academy product
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has given a grim update on former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund academy product Stephen Sama, who has been training with the club for three weeks.
The Cameroon-born defence stalwart was at Mamelodi Sundowns for a few days earlier in August before switching to SuperSport, where he is trying his luck.
However, just a day after the defender started training with Matsatsantsa, he picked up an injury.
“He trained one day and has been injured for three weeks. He is rehabilitating. We will see,” Hunt told the media.
The 29-year-old centre-back hopes to recover from his injury before he can impress the former Bidvest Wits and Kaizer Chiefs coach.
Since joining SuperSport, Hunt has added a bit of experience to a squad thin on experience.
His former captain at Wits, Thulani Hlatshwayo, reunited with him after two years at Orlando Pirates.
Hlatshwayo’s Bucs teammate Wayde Jooste is training with the club, with a decision to be announced soon.
He would walk into the SuperSport dressing room and add a bit of experience, having been signed by Liverpool as a 16-year-old teenager in 2009. He joined Liverpool on a two-year deal.
The Merseyside giants handed him his senior team debut on 1 August 2011 in a pre-season friendly against Valerenga.
The following year, he was on the bench when the club faced West Brom in a League Cup match.
In 2014, Liverpool deemed him surplus to requirements and released him after failing to establish himself in the senior team.
The defender went on to feature for Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart II, Greuther Fürth and Heracles Almelo.
The last club he played for was Accrington Stanley in League One, the third tier of English football. The Lancashire-based club released him at the end of last season.
