Jadon Sancho joins Marcus Rashford in turning to Benni McCarthy
Manchester United attacker Jadon Sancho has become the latest star to turn to Benni McCarthy.
The former Borussia Dortmund star had a challenging maiden season after his R1.5 trillion move to United.
Sancho only managed five goals the entire season before the Red Devils welcomed Erik ten Hag as the new manager.
BENNI MCCARTHY BEHIND SANCHO’S FORM
The England star battled for form and fitness during the first half of the current season, only managing three goals in his first 14 games before injury in October.
However, since his return from a personal training break, Sancho’s two goals have seen him equal last season’s five goals.
It has since emerged that South African-born coach Benni McCarthy is behind the star’s return to form.
McCarthy joined Ten Hag’s technical team at the start of the season, with his job to get the best out of the club’s attackers.
The Bafana Bafana all-time top goalscorer has done a sterling job of getting the best out of United’s forwards.
Sancho’s international teammate, Marcus Rashford, has been the biggest beneficiary, scoring 24 goals.
The United Kingdom’s Mirror reports that Sancho requested to work one-on-one with McCarthy after his break late last year.
“Benni McCarthy’s work behind the scenes with Marcus Rashford at Manchester United has been so impressive that it prompted Jadon Sancho to request one-on-one sessions with him,” wrote the publication.
MARCUS RASHFORD THE BIGGEST BENEFICIARY
This was reportedly after his time away from the club, partly spent in the Netherlands at the recommendation of Dutch manager Ten Hag.
Upon his return to join the rest of his teammates, Sancho is said to have worked with McCarthy. The Cape Town-born McCarthy scored 37 goals in 120 appearances in the Premier League.
With his experience, he is now helping United’s attackers. Earlier in the season, McCarthy described his role as “coordinating movements and finishing and making sure that the guys are sharp.”
The former Cape Town City and AmaZulu head coach’s impact has not gone unnoticed, with fans chanting his name in their side’s 3-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday. He was also swarmed by fans eager to get an autograph.
