Junior Dion’s late equaliser denies Sundowns a win against AmaZulu
Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu shared the spoils after playing a 2-2 draw in the DStv Premiership under the lights of Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday night.
It was Junior Dion’s late equaliser that kept a point for Usuthu at home while Ramahlwe Mphahlele scored the other goal. On the other hand, Bongani Zungu and Peter Shalulile got on the scoresheet for the away side.
From the off, it was Sundowns who kept the ball on their feet more than the home side. However, they couldn’t get a clear sight of goal. With Bongani Zungu influential in the middle of the park, Masandawana continued to call the tune while they couldn’t find the breakthrough.
Moments later, Usuthu gathered some momentum and upped the ante as they were looking for the opener. They forced the visitors to have some busy spells at the back.
BONGANI ZUNGU SCORED HIS FIRST GOAL FOR SUNDOWNS SINCE HIS RETURN
In the 26th minute, Rally Bwalya failed to glue the ball to his feet and lost near the D-line. Bafana Ba Style exploited the Zambian midfielder’s mistake as Bongani Zungu scored his first goal since returning to the club after a set-up in the box by Gaston Sirino.
Sundowns’ lead was almost short-lived as George Maluleka came close to equalising when he broke away and thumped his effort narrowly over the bar.
In the 35th minute, Shalulile wasted a glorious chance to double his side’s lead when he faced Jody February and skied the ball over the bar.
Trailing by one goal, AmaZulu tried to pick themselves up and launched a number of attacks on the opponents as half-time approached.
The match reached the interval with Downs still leading 1-0.
Chasing the game, Usuthu came out for the second half with real intent, and they came close to levelling the score a couple of times.
However, Rulani Mokwena’s charges looked like they would score whenever they had quick raids.
PETER SHALULILE SCORED HIS 12TH GOAL OF THE SEASON
In the 58th minute, Shalulile doubled the lead for the Tshwane giants, with Haashim Domingo providing the assist in the box.
Seven minutes later, Usuthu pulled one back when George Maluleka lofted the corner kick into Mphahlele, who headed home to make it 2-1.
Within the last 20 minutes of the game, Usuthu were electric in their forward movements and were capable of sustaining pressure inside Sundowns’ own half.
They eventually scored the equaliser via Dion, who bombed a 25-yard shot to beat Ronwen Williams.
