Kaizer Chiefs seal victory over stubborn Maritzburg United

Kaizer Chiefs sealed a 3-2 victory over a stubborn side of Maritzburg United in a DStv Premiership on Saturday in front of a buzzing crowd at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

With this victory, they completed a double over Fadlu Davids’ side as they beat them 3-0 in the first round.

It was a lively start for both sides and the home side nearly took the lead in the 2nd minute through Kwame Peprah, who couldn’t get to the ball first.

EARLY GOALS FOR KAIZER CHIEFS FROM DOLLY AND SAILE

Two minutes later, Keagan Dolly gave Amakhosi an early lead, tapping into an empty net after the goalkeeper repelled Ashley Du Preez.

In the 10th minute, Arthur Zwane’s charges doubled the lead through Christian Saile Basomboli, who unleashed a thumping short on the D-line.

While the Team of Choice tried to find a comeback to the game, Chiefs looked harmful when they had the ball.

MARITZBURG’S COMEBACK

In the 20th minute, the home side pulled one back through Mogamad De Goede, who headed home from Keagan Ritchie’s corner-kick.

It gave them some confidence as they kept carving through the heart of the Glamour Boys’ defence.

Karim Kimvuidi was the most influential when Maritzburg attacked, with Kwame Peprah and Ali Meza adding numbers when piling pressure on the away side’s back line.

Five minutes before half-time, Maritzburg levelled the matters via Amadou Soukouna’s free-kick from almost an acute angle.

The interval arrived with a 2-2 scoreline on the board.

The open exchanges of the second half saw Chiefs playing more into Maritzburg’s half. Most chances that were created fell, in the main, to them.

Around the hour mark, there was a bit of a lack of opportunities as both sides seemed to be more cautious.

However, in the 70th minute, Chiefs were awarded a penalty after De Goede brought down Du Preez in the box. Yusuf Maart stepped up and rattled the back of the net from the spot, getting his side back in front.

Towards the end of the match, Zwane’s troops elected to be protective of what they had with little forward movement and went on to grab maximum points on the road.
