Morgan Mammila takes a thin-veiled dig at Bafana coach Hugo Broos

Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila has taken a thin-veiled dig at Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

Mammila said Bafana Bafana can only deliver the goods on the world stage if managed by a youthful coach and not a 70-year-old.

“We want to go back to the old Bafana Bafana. We are tired of excuses now. Only young and local national team coaches will do well in their country,” he tweeted.

Mammila was reacting to the performance of Morocco’s youthful mentor Walid Walid Ragragui at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

The former Chippa CEO-turned coach did not mention Broos directly when he tweeted his opinion

However, the outspoken Morgan Mammila simply said a 70-year-old pensioner must stay home.

Mammila said the national team cannot progress with old coaches such as the current 70-year-old Belgian.

“We must not shy to copy what is working from [the] national team of Morocco and other African countries, who were in the World Cup. A 70-year-old pensioner must stay at home,” he said.

Mammila then suggested that Saudi Arabia-based coach Pitso Mosimane should take over Bafana Bafana coaching job.

“Pitso must take over now and assisted by Steve [Komphela]. Come home,” he said.

Mosimane served Bafana Bafana as an assistant coach then as head coach.

He went on to manage Sundowns then Al Ahly in Egypt before picking a job at Al Ahli Saudi in Saudi Arabia.

Mammila’s remarks have come amid Broos’ several observations bemoaning the lack of quality players at his disposal in the national team.

Walid Ragragui steered the Atlas Lions to the semifinal of the World Cup after beating fancied Portugal 1-0 on Saturday.

It is the first time an African team has scaled such heights at the tournament.

Homegrown 47-year-old coach Walid Ragragui was only appointed in August this year to replace Bosnian Vahid Hallidhodzic.
