PSL star dies after collapsing in training

A PSL player has died after he collapsed in training on Tuesday, 7 March.

DStv Premiership outfit Richards Bay announced the passing of one of their players who featured against Kaizer Chiefs over the weekend.

The club’s defensive midfielder Siphamandla Mtolo, who was aged 29, is reported to have died during the club’s morning training session.

The KwaZulu Natal outfit confirmed the sad development via a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

COLLAPSED IN TRAINING

“It is with deep sadness to announce that Richards Bay Football Club has untimely lost one of the midfielders, Siphamandla “Spepe” Mtolo. He collapsed this morning during training,” said the club in the statement.

“The club is not in a position to provide further information at this stage and asks that his family’s privacy is respected in this difficult time of bereavement.

“His presence both on and off the pitch will be sorely missed. Thoughts and prayers of everyone in Richards Bay Football Club are with his family, friends and loved ones.

“A further statement will follow in due course,” the statement added.

Statement from Richards Bay

Mtolo joined The Natal Rich Boyz in 2020 from their provincial rivals Uthongathi FC and played an integral role in helping the club gain promotion in the 2021/22 season.

MAIDEN CAMPAIGN IN THE TOP FLIGHT

He didn’t get to enjoy the club’s maiden campaign in the top flight after he suffered an injury that kept him out for almost six months.

He played his first game in the DStv Premiership last year on the 31st of December, coming on from the bench to replace Nkanyiso Zungu in the 69th minute.

From then, he only missed one match, where his side won 2-0 against Marumo Gallants on 14 January 2022, as he was an unused substitute.

Overall, he featured in nine games in all competitions.
