SAFA confirm venue for Bafana Bafana and Liberia clash

SAFA have finally confirmed the venue for one of the upcoming Bafana Bafana’s AFCON qualifier against Liberia.

South Africa will play crucial back-to-back matches against the Lone Stars in March. The two games will potentially determine whether Hugo Broos’ troops secure a spot in the continental showpiece.

The next edition was initially set to take place between June and July this year. However, it was postponed for January and February 2024 due to weather concerns in the host country, Côte d’Ivoire.

SA will host the first leg on the 24th of March before they jet off to Liberia for the return tie that will be played four days later.

According to SAFA’s Head of Stakeholder Dominic Chimhavi, the first leg will be staged at the Orlando Stadium.

Bafana’s first assignment in the qualifiers didn’t go well, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat on the road at the hands of Morocco on 9 June 2022.

Broos’ men scored first via the Burnley star Lyle Foster who was still plying his trade at Westerlo at the time. The North African giants stole the maximum points towards the end of the match.

The Atlas Lions, who finished fourth in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, will visit Bafana on the 12th of June in what will be the last round of the qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe, which was supposed to be the fourth country in the group, was disqualified from the qualifying phase. This was after they, along with Kenya, were suspended by FIFA for the government’s interference in the operations of football.
