‘Sekgota should not be at Kaizer Chiefs’
A former Vitoria de Setubal coach, who coached Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota, says the Bafana Bafana international has no business playing his football in the domestic league.
Chiquinho Conde coached Sekgota at the Portuguese side and believes the 25-year-old was making steady progress in Europe.
Conde, now Mozambique’s coach, and Sekgota reunited in Mbombela last week when Bafana played his Mambas side.
“We didn’t get a chance to talk because I was unhappy I had lost, but I did greet him,” Conde told FARPost in a telephonic interview.
He went on to question Sekgota’s decision to return to South Africa. Conde is convinced the Amakhosi star would be far had he stayed overseas.
“I worked there for two years, and when Sekgota did not get game time in the first team, he used to play for the Under 23s [which I coached] to get match fitness.
“So I would see him. I also worked with Sphephelo ‘Yaya’ Sithole. He’s a fantastic midfielder,” he added.
While Arthur Zwane has hinted he is building his team around Sekgota, Conde says the move to the DStv Premiership curtails his progress.
“He made a mistake by coming back to play locally. It is not good for his development as a player, as he is still young. Sekgota should not be at Kaizer Chiefs.”
Sekgota cut his teeth at the academy of Polokwane United, having joined them in 2012.
He, however, began his senior career with the Lithuanian club Stumbras five years later before joining Vitoria in January 2019. His professional debut came in a 2-0 Primeira Liga loss to Porto early in 2019.
After a year in Portugal, he returned to South Africa and joined Bidvest Wits on 17 January 2020. Last season, he joined Chiefs but was loaned out to Swallows.
