There is uncertainty over Bafana Bafana forward Fagrie Lakay’s future with Pyramids FC of Egypt.
This comes after the cash-rich club’s board announced it would stop its investment in Egypt. They cited the “injustice” they have suffered this season as the reason.
The announcement was made on Thursday ahead of the crunch Egypt Cup final against Percy Tau’s Al Ahly.
The two clubs clash in Egypt’s main knockout football cup competition at 21h15 [SA time].
Fagrie Lakay Pyramids future
“Pyramids FC owners have decided to suspend investments in the club, social projects, the sports city and the stadium due to the absence of the principle of equal opportunities and the absence of justice,” the club announced via a statement.
The CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinalists further said they would hold a vital meeting to consider the future come end of season.
This is not the first that the Pyramids hierarchy has threatened to abandon the Egypt project.
Last year in January, Pyramids FC’s Emirati owner Salem Al-Shamshi dropped a hint that he could put the club up for sale.
Al-Shamsi bought Pyramids in July 2019 from Saudi General Entertainment Authority chairman Turki Al-Sheikh.
Pyramids owners want to sell club
Should they decide to sell the club, a new owner would likely come in with their own plans regarding the squad and coaching staff, which may affect Lakay.
The former Cape Town City star has been at the club since January 2022 after signing a three-year deal.
“A board meeting will be held at the end of the season to consider the future of the club.”
Pyramids’ statement came hours after the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) appointed an Egyptian referee for the Egypt Cup Final between Ahly and Pyramids FC.
The club had asked the EFA earlier this week to appoint a foreign-based referee for the potentially explosive clash, but the Egyptian football governing body turned down their request.
The ex-Citizen, Lakay, has found the net four times and assisted twice in 19 outings. 10 of his appearances have been starts, coming from the bench nine times in 22 matches.
It’s Lakay vs Tau in Egypt
Lakay, whose Pyramids also qualified for the knockout stages of the CAF Confederation Cup, has scored once in seven games of the CAF club competition.
Meanwhile, Lakay will be relishing the Egypt Cup final clash against Percy Tau’s Al Ahly. The Bafana Bafana teammates lock horns in Cairo as they both look to add silverware in North Africa.
