‘Who’s Coach of the Season?’ Steve Komphela answers

Mamelodi Sundowns first-team coach Steve Komphela has given an unequivocal answer on who should be given the Coach of the Season award.

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach was speaking after the Nedbank Cup draw at the SuperSport studios on Monday evening.

While showering praise on the Brazilians’ head coach Rulani Mokwena, Komphela was asked whether the award should be presented to the 36-year-old tactician.

STEVE KOMPHELA ON WHO DESERVES COACH OF THE SEASON AWARD

He said, “Please, so be it, ningamrobhi [don’t rob him].”

“Because there’s a tendency that things must be done based on certain circumstances, but he’s done a hell of a great job. Let’s be honest.

“And you can’t say whether they should give him or not, but if his work says give it to him, you have no option.”

The former Orlando Pirates coach took over as Masandawana’s sole head coach in October 2022. This was after Sundowns decided to restructure their technical team.

The changes saw Komphela being promoted to First Team Coach while Manqoba Mngqithi was demoted to the Senior Coach position.

Since then, the club hasn’t tasted a defeat in all competitions. They are also on the verge of claiming their sixth consecutive DStv Premiership title.

Meanwhile, Mokwena recently admitted he would be happy to receive the award. However, he highlighted that it would be on behalf of all his supporting staff.

“If it were to be bestowed upon me, it would be on behalf of everybody, the staff, the football club, and everyone investing,” Mokwena told Marawa Sports Worldwide.

“From the conditioning coaches, the assistant coaches, the analysts, these people work tirelessly every single day. We work so hard on the next coming game. We work so hard on the previous match.

“This is the level of consistency that’s reflected off-the-pitch. It’s a level of consistency that you find on hard work that is reflected on the pitch.”
