Why Chalwe believes Arthur Zwane will have a good season

Ex-Chipolopolo Zambia and Amakhosi striker Songwe Chalwe is confident Arthur Zwane will have a good season with Kaizer Chiefs despite the rough start to his tenure as head coach.

Zwane was appointed Amakhosi boss in late May, a month after taking interim charge in their last seven games of the season following the departure of Stuart Baxter in April.

Chiefs, who went on to finish the season in fifth place, have had a rough start to the new campaign losing two of their opening three games.

The highlight came last Saturday when defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns crushed them 4-0 to suffer one of their worst PSL losses.

“Personally, I have played with Arthur Zwane, and he is a legend at the club. He understands the game very well and the culture of the team,” Songwe told FARPost.

Songwe played for Chiefs between 2006 and 2008. He has hung up his boots and is currently an assistant coach at Zambian club Power Dynamos.

“I would say he hasn’t done badly. It is too early in the season, so let us give him time to settle down,” Songwe said.

“As I said, he understands the team’s culture, and I believe he will have a good season.”
Chiefs are 12th on three points and play host to unbeaten leaders Richards Bay on August 20 in Durban.

The man nicknamed ‘10111’ has been tasked with turning around the Soweto giants’ fortunes after an eight-year trophy drought.

During the off-season, he brought in several signings and shipped out many of the players from last season in an effort to rebuild a formidable side.

Of his new signings, Zitha Kwinika has slotted in quite well in defence, with Yusef Maart and Siyethemba Sithebe gradually settling in. Ashley du Preez has already registered a goal in the 3-0 win over Maritzburg United.
