Zwane heeds Chiefs doctor on Khune advice
Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane on Wednesday took heed of the team doctor’s advice on Itumeleng Khune.
Khune, who was initially in the starting line-up to tackle TS Galaxy on Wednesday evening, was replaced by Bruce Bvuma a few minutes before kickoff.
The decision by Zwane left many Amakhosi supporters wondering as the veteran goalkeeper, Khune, was set to return to action.
Khune had missed Chiefs’ league match against Chippa United at the weekend.
However, Zwane has since explained why Khune had to make way for Bvuma.
ZWANE EXPLAINS
Zwane said Chiefs captain, Khune felt a slight pain in the knee area during warm-up.
And with Khune sustaining an injury against Stellenbosch not long ago, Zwane said he thought it was wise to take the team’s doctor’s advice to withdraw the goalie from the Galaxy game.
The Glamour Boys drew 2-all with the Rockets in the DStv Premiership clash at FNB Stadium in Soweto.
Ashley Du Preez and Keagan Dolly scored for Chiefs, while former Amakhosi attacker Bernard Parker and Djakaridja Traore were on the scoresheet for Galaxy in the four-goal thriller.
“Itu was supposed to start, in actual fact, so, unfortunately, he had a knee injury,” Zwane told the media.
“He felt some pain in his knee and we went to see the doctor.
“The doctor gave me a report to say we can’t take a risk, let’s rather play it safe, and that’s how we had to quickly make a change and start with Bruce.”
The 35-year-old Khune has been in decent form this season, pulling off several exceptional saves.
His most notable performance came in the MTN8 quarterfinals against Stellies.
Khune rolled back the years, saving two penalties in the shoot-out to lead Chiefs to the MTN8 semis.
He has featured in seven games in all competitions, keeping one clean sheet and conceding six times.
