Two fan favourites Percy Tau has to compete against for a place at Ahly

Despite growing criticism on Percy Tau from Al Ahly fans and some club legends, Cavin Johnson believes Tau has all it takes to be successful at the club.

The Bafana Bafana international was lured to Ahly by Pitso Mosimane and many have suggested that the departure of Mosimane might work against him.

Johnson is no stranger to Egyptian football after serving as an assistant coach to the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach who recently parted ways with the Egyptian giants.

“Look, I think Tau has all it takes to make it at Al Ahly, he’s a boy with a good head on his shoulders, from his days at Sundowns you can see he’s a player with a good mental strength. Obviously I never worked with him, knowing the environment in Egypt, it’s not like any other league its different so it takes special type of characters to make it in that part of the world,” said the former Platinum Stars coach.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion FC star made 26 appearances, scored eight goals while contributing 6 assists in his first season for the Red Devils.

The 28-year-old talisman competes with fan-favourites Taher Mohamed and Mohamed Sherif for a starting berth in the strikeforce for the 10 time CAF Champions league winners.

“You know it can’t be easy for Tau to compete with players [Taher Mohamed and Mohamed Sherif] who are fan-favourites across Egypt but the contribution he has made in his first season says a lot about him, like I said he’s a very strong player mentally and I don’t see a reason he wouldn’t make it.”
