What Phakamani Mahlambi’s agent said about First Division interest
Glyn Binkin, the agent of Phakamani Mahlambi, has ruled out the possibility of the player signing for a National First Division club.
Binkin says the midfielder has options to move overseas after recently leaving Mamelodi Sundowns. The Brazilians decided against activating the option of extending the 24-year-old’s contract, who is now a free agent.
He said they will only consider Premier Soccer League and overseas teams. “He is a free agent, and we are not in a hurry to find him a club,” Binkin told FARPost.
“There is a bit of time, and we are talking to both PSL and overseas clubs. There are a lot of options on the table. I cannot name the clubs at the moment because I don’t like saying things before they happen.
“Playing in the first division? It’s a no. We are only looking at the PSL and overseas teams. When we conclude something, we’ll let you know.”
Mhlambi spent the last two seasons out on loan at AmaZulu and Chippa United.
He struggled for game time during both loan spells, although his time with the Chilli Boys was blighted by injuries.
The midfielder managed two league appearances at Usuthu as coach Benni McCarthy was widely quoted in the media encouraging the player to improve his work rate.
At Chippa, Mahlambu featured in three PSL games, all coming in September 2021.
The player’s struggles come amid reports of some off-field issues believed to have distracted his game.
After starting out as a teenager at Bidvest Wits, Mahlambi then became the first South African player to ply his trade in North Africa when he signed for Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
But following a brief spell in Cairo, he returned home in 2018 and flourished in his first season at Sundowns before his career took a downward spiral.
