The bold statement Vela Khumalo made about Chiefs’ reserve side
Kaizer Chiefs reserve side coach Vela Khumalo has boldly stated that Amakhosi will not be buying players from other clubs in two years after clinching the 2022 DStv Diski Shield on Saturday.
Vela Khumalo is convinced they are heading in the right direction in grooming the club’s youngsters, describing it as “cooking”.
He said this after his boys stunned reigning league champions Stellenbosch FC 2-0 in front of a packed crowd at the Mpumalanga Stadium.
The Glamour Boys made their intentions clear in the first two matches; in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, defeating Tshwane duo SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns 4-2 and 2-0, respectively.
“This is just a synopsis of what we are busy cooking, and I think we’re reaching that too quick. I’m very happy. I’m excited my lads did well, and there is too much talent on these boys. At the age they are, they are still at school. They now need to change and start thinking they have a project or assignment for tomorrow. It’s too much on them, they are surviving because of the talent they have,” said Vela Khumalo.
“We need to cook more in the next two years. We are not going to buy players. These players will be ready for PSL. We want to dominate PSL with these boys. We said we want confidence, we want to win this thing, we are still cooking. There is a lot to come, and these boys are going there.”
“It’s scary that we are in this final, and we’ve won it. It’s so scary it will cook too soon for me. I think we’re building something here, we’re cooking for the first team, and hopefully, they are going to help us go through.”
Speaking ahead of the upcoming 2022/23 season, Khumalo anticipates a difficult season. The Soweto giants are eyeing their first Diski Challenge title.
“It’s going to be hectic. It’s Kaizer Chiefs pressure time, pressure time. We’ve won this. People are going to say let’s win everything that comes our way, but let’s see how it goes,” Khumalo concluded.
In the third place encounter played earlier on Saturday, Surprise Moriri’s Masandawana came from behind to defeat Chippa United on penalties. The exciting match had initially ended 2-2.
