Klate relishing clash with mentor Hunt on his PSL debut

Chippa United coach Daine Klate says he is looking forward to facing his mentor Gavin Hunt as he is set to take charge of his first match as a PSL coach.

Referred to as “father and son” because of their strong relationship, the duo has worked together for many years on different occasions. They have achieved great things when working together, winning silverware.

Hunt is the one who gave the 37-year-old an opportunity at SuperSport United. They reunited years later at Bidvest Wits and then worked as coaches at Chippa United before Hunt was shown the exit following a string of bad results.

Heading into the game, the Gqeberha-born mentor foresees a great match. He is ready and up for the challenge with high confidence that they can cause an upset.

“It’s going to be a good game. I know the club well; they are still family to me [SuperSport United]. We look forward to it, I’m looking forward to it, but it’s not about Hunt. It’s more about Chippa United and collecting the points available for us during the match,”Daine Klate told the media.

“Having worked with him [Gavin Hunt] at Chippa, bringing me back at Chippa, then when he left, I continued. Now I find myself coaching in my first match as a head coach of a PSL team against him.”

Hunt and Klate Discussing tactics

“If you asked me a few years ago whether I would like to coach my first game against Hunt, I would have said yes.”

The former Orlando Pirates star further paid tribute to Hunt and SuperSport United for their massive role in his football career as a player and a coach.

“I am where I am today because of their contributions to my career. I will forever be grateful for having won so many cups,” he concluded.
