Former Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates winger Sifiso Myeni has explained how his Botswana move happened, writes Kabelo Boranabi.
Myeni was unveiled as a VTM player this week after signing a one-year deal with the newly promoted Botswana second-tier side.
The 34-year-old flew into Gaborone on Tuesday and trained with the Debswana First Division South side for the first time on Wednesday.
Myeni has explained that the move up north was not motivated by money. He insists he was attracted by VTM’s ambitions, adding that he turned down several other offers.
“I had offers, yes. I would not disclose the names of the teams which were interested in signing me.
“But I did have offers, but I ended up choosing VTM. I met with the chairman and the other people in the club management.
“I liked the vision they had for the club, so I thought I should come here and be part of the project,” Myeni said.
The 34-year-old also said he has come in contact with the club in 2018, and it was an easy decision to make.
“I have been following Botswana football on social media platforms. I have also been following VTM on social media.
“I must say I first the club and the club management in 2018 while I was still playing for SuperSport United.
“The team was having their pre-season camp in Rustenburg in South Africa and played against some of the local clubs.
“At the time, SuperSport was also having pre-season in Rustenburg. I managed to meet with some of VTM FC officials, and we have been in contact since then,” he explained.
The winger, however, admitted he is lacking match fitness after a long sabbatical from the game.
With the new season only starting in October, he believes he will be ready when it starts.
“I am not there yet [in terms of fitness], but I can train and play more before the league starts. I think I can be there.
“I just need to train more, and with the help of the technical team and my teammates, I think by the time the league starts, I will be fit to play,” added Myeni.
VTM will compete in the second-tier league for the first time in its five years of existence.
The Botswana side’s followership on social media jumped from 30,000 to 250,000 following the announcement.
