Gavin Hunt describes Goss-Chigova situation as a long term solution
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says his decision to play George Chigova in goal instead of Ricardo Goss is a ‘long term’ solution for the club.
According to the mentor, he’s planning ahead and had already made some calculations. He was aware of two matches against Sundowns of which Goss is ineligible to play due to the agreement between the two clubs.
Goss was available for selection in the last two DStv Premiership matches after serving a two-match ban for receiving a red card against Chippa United. He, however, didn’t feature in any of the matches.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach wanted backup goalkeeper George Chigova to settle in well two games before facing the reigning champions twice.
“Obviously [Ricardo] Goss can’t play against Sundowns. Goss got sent off the first game, which means he misses the next two games,” Hunt told the media.
“We got two games before we played Sundowns, then play Sundowns. Do you play Goss for two games and then throw in a goalkeeper at Sundowns? Two games, or do we try to get somebody to play? I would rather play somebody give them two games before we play Sundowns. It was a big discussion around it.”
“The most important result us next game. You may think I’m a bit crazy, but you’ve got to always think long term even though this is a short term job.”
George Chigova was, however, happy to have Goss as his competition for the number one spot at the club.
“We are blessed to have Goss here, unfortunately, he can’t play against Sundowns. Someone has to. I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Chigova told the media.
Joining Goss on the list of ineligible players to play against Sundowns are Thabang Sibanyoni and Grant Margeman.
The Tshwane derby headlines the DStv Premiership matches heading into the weekend. Kickoff at Lucas Moripe Stadium is at 19:30.
