Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe has pointed out the one thing that changed following the coaching structure adjustments last month.
Motsepe is on record saying they shook up the coaching roles because they needed “more consistency” across the reporting lines in the club.
The unexpected changes came after Sundowns suffered a 3-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 semi-final second leg.
Rulani Mokwena took over as the sole head coach. At the same time, Steve Komphela was promoted to the first team coach, with Manqoba Mngqithi demoted to the senior coach role that Komphela previously occupied.
This surprised many, particularly the demotion of Mngqithi, who previously had the privilege of having the final word when there was a lack of consensus among the technical team members.
Motsepe says Downs wants to stay ahead of the curve and believes this decision will revamp the club.
SUNDOWNS WANTED CONSISTENCY IN REPORTING LINES
“In football and life, you must always try to evolve. You must always look at ways to improve,” Motsepe told the World Football Summit Africa journalists at ICC.
“If you don’t do that, you might find yourself in a situation where you’re being overtaken by others willing to improve and evolve.
“It was about making sure that there was a little more consistency across the reporting lines in the football club.
“So by having a head coach, first-team coach, and an assistant coach, you know that there’s a reporting line, there’s consistency throughout the technical team.”
Motsepe went on to heap praise on Mokwena, who has produced impressive performances since his appointment.

With the 35-year-old tactician in charge, Masandawana hasn’t conceded a goal and have won all four games they have played to date, rattling the back of the net 15 times.
“Coach Rulani, so far, has done an amazing job in his position, and that’s a wonderful credit to him as a leader, and it’s also credit to the other two coaches in the coaching department,” Motsepe added.
“There’s been a wonderful sense of unity, togetherness, and a shared vision in where we want to take the football club.”
