Former Kaizer Chiefs defender to join Cape Town City

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho looks set to play his football at Cape Town City in the second half of the DStv Premiership season.

Indications are that he is on his way out of Danish second-tier side HB Koge.

FARPost can confirm that Gordinho is currently training with City as they prepare for the season’s second round.

The 28-year-old recently returned to the country after his spell in Denmark, where he also turned out for Danish outfit Viborg.

The former Chiefs academy player joined HB Koge in July on an 18-month deal. However, the two parties look to have parted ways, with a return to the DStv Premiership imminent.

“As things stand, he will play for Cape Town City. He should be part of the team in January as there is already a verbal agreement in place,” a City source told FARPost.

When contacted for comment, City chairman John Comitis professed ignorance, saying he was away.

“I’m away, I’m not sure what’s happening. I’m only back in Cape Town on Friday. I’ll find out from my son,” Comitis told FARPost.

Lorenzo Gordino, who had his shoe in Bafana Bafana in 2017 at the COSAFA Cup, brings experience to City’s defence. Overseas, his most recent stint saw him play under former Liverpool star Daniel Agger.

The centre-back has refined his game in Europe over the last two seasons and has become strong and aggressive in his defensive game.

His Viborg spell saw him often carry the ball forward and aid the team’s offensive game.

Lorenzo Gordino came through Chiefs’ youth development system but failed to knuckle down a place as a senior regular during his time at Naturena.

After that, he had spells with Bloemfontein Celtic and Bidvest Wits before moving to Europe in 2020. City may be receiving a player at the prime of his powers after his stints in the Scandinavian nation.
