Ugandan referee banned for 15 years for match-fixing
A referee has been banned from all football activities for 15 years in Uganda for alleged match-fixing.
FARPost has seen a press release from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) announcing the ban of Kalibala John Bosco.
John Bosco is accused of having received bribes to influence the outcome of some matches played last year in the Ugandan Top Division.
The matches in question were between Tooro United versus UPDF played on November 30 2021.
And Gaddafi FC versus Onduparaka FC on December 21 2021.
WHAT FUFA DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE DECIDED
FUFA says its Ethics and Disciplinary Committee meted out the punishment on Bosco after analysing evidence at hand “as well as his own admissions.”
“…[it was] established that in the matches mentioned above and on other numerous occasions, Mr Kalibala received financial gain in return for influencing the outcome of the matches,” said FUFA.
FUFA accused Bosco of infringement of Article 31 of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Code.
“The decision was based on FUFA’s zero tolerance against all kinds of match manipulation and or match fixing,” FUFA’s statement reads.
“Further investigations are ongoing on this matter and other cases as reported to FUFA.”
HOW THE MATCH-FIXING HAPPENED
Uganda’s Monitor newspaper says John Bosco awarded four penalties in the first-half of the game between Tooro and UPDF who won 4-2.
Hussein Mwanje and Ivan Ahimbisibwe scored the penalties for their respective sides, according to the newspaper.
Thereafter, Frank Yiga and Ambrose Kigozi scored again from the penalty spot one each to hand UPDF the 4-2 win.
In the other game, Shaban Muhammad and Jamaldine Buchochera were on target in the 11th and 23rd minutes for Gaddafi to help them draw level with Onduparaka.
Thereafter, the controversial referee awarded a penalty to the hosts, Gaddafi, in the 30th minute for an alleged foul on Brian Kalumba, according to the newspaper.
Hassan Musana for Gaddafi stepped forward to take the penalt.
But Onduparaka keeper Mathias Muwanga proved equal to the task by saving it.
However, referee Bosco was having none of it, he ordered a retake claiming Muwanga had moved off his line before the penalty was taken.
The referee arrived at the decision despite that his first assistant Charles Zziwa did not signal so.
Musana ended up scoring on his second attempt.
Onduparaka eventually scored but Gaddafi’s Ronald Mutebi saved it with five minutes to full time
Bosco intervened to disallow the goal claiming Mutebi had moved off his line before the penalty was taken.
Nathan Aloro scored in the second attempt, according to the newspaper.
The referee courted more controversy when he added six minutes after normal time in extra ordinary circumstances.
The referee did not blow the final whistle even after the end of the added time.
Bosco courted controversy once more as he awarded a penalty to Gaddafi.
Luckily for Onduparaka, Muwanga saved the penalty then the game ended.
