Ex-Swallows defender Chagi set for La Masia debut after penning deal

Former Swallows defender Mbonisi Chagi looks set to make his official debut for La Masia when they face Magesi in the Nedbank Cup preliminary round.

The two teams clash on Friday [15h00] at the Bidvest Stadium as they both look to start the year strongly.

Chagi joined La Masia earlier this week after an impressive trial spell with the Johannesburg outfit.

The speedy fullback was on the radar of Highlands Park and AmaTuks but has since settled for the Motsepe Foundation Championship side.

LA MASIA STRENGTHEN SQUAD

Chagi joins La Masia until the end of the season, although both parties can extend.

The 24-year-old was part of the Dube Birds squad that won the 2019/20 GladAfrica Championship.

Chagi parted ways with Swallows after they gained promotion and joined TS Sporting.

He will be hoping to help La Masia challenge for honours in the second tier.

His agent Andrew Matjila of Living The Dream Sports Agency, confirmed the move, saying it was timely for Chagi.

“For us, it’s always key to get a player in the right club, and we believe he’s at a club where he will further progress in his career. We’ve had conversations with the club, and we strongly believe ‘Bhasera’ will fit perfectly.

“The type of football they play and their vision certainly suit him, and he is excited to get started. He’s spent time around the club and is familiar with his new teammates, so he should settle in swiftly,” Matjila told FARPost.

IMPRESSED BHASERA

Nicknamed Bhasera after the former Kaizer Chiefs defender Onismor Bhasera. The talented fullback recently impressed the SuperSport United captain during a friendly match, and he gifted him a pair of boots.

Chagi is gifted with solid defensive fundamentals, positional sense and awareness. Besides reading the game well, he is also deadly on set-pieces.
