Mammila pulls race card as he defends Chippa’s recent slump
Chippa United head coach Morgan Mammila is not losing any sleep over the club’s recent slump in form in the DStv Premiership.
When Mammila took over in September 2022 as Chippa’s coach, he enjoyed a good run of form, winning four consecutive DStv Premiership matches, a record for the Eastern Cape team.
But the tables have turned as Chippa have now gone five matches without a win, suffering three defeats and two draws, conceding 10 goals in the process.
When asked if he was not concerned about the prospect of losing his job, Mammila asked why other coaches of a different colour are not asked the same question when their teams are doing badly.
Mammila reckons he is asked such questions because he is a rural boy, not because Chippa’s boss, Chippa Mpengesi, is trigger-happy as he usually takes action when a coach fails to deliver results.
MORGAN MAMMILA A RURAL BOY
“I don’t need to be a white person to be where I am,” he told the media after Chippa’s 2-1 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday night in Tshwane.
“Don’t look for colour, guys. Look at my stats. I have won four, drawn two, I have lost three. The white guy, how many games did he lose? Three games in a row.
“Did you ask him this question (about his future)? The answer is no. Because why? Morgan is a rural boy,” he said.
FOOTBALL IS BUSINESS, SAYS THE CHIPPA COACH
“In football, this is business, my friend. If the results are not coming, remember you are talking to management.”
“I know these things, I have fired coaches when the results were not coming,” continued Mammila.
“I know this game; I know the worth of the status. Remember, Chippa is more worth than other statuses because of where Chippa is and the sponsors that they are having.
“But football does not lie, the stats do not lie. Can you fire a coach who plays like this? Will you get a better person who can play like this?
“Will you get a coach who can win four games in a row? Who can take a team from number 16 to number 6?
Chippa United are in position nine in the DStv Premiership after 16 matches, six points above bottom-placed Marumo Gallants.
“I am not concerned, you guys must do the stats. There are guys with pro licenses here who have been here for many months. Go and check their wins, they are not even close to me. Go and check.
“All the pro-license guys are behind me. So be honest to yourselves not to me but to yourself. The stats must not lie.
“Are there any pro license holder coaches from number one to number nine? I don’t think there is any, go and check.”
