How Knowledge Musona tormented Itumeleng Khune

While Knowledge Musona was a thorn in the flesh of most DStv Premiership defenders and goalkeepers, former Kaizer Chiefs defender Thomas Sweswe says he also tormented captain Itumeleng Khune at training.

According to Sweswe, Knowledge Musona was lethal even at training so much that the team’s goalkeepers would take turns to see who avoids conceding from Musona during training sessions.

The retired Zimbabwean footballer recalls how they were prompted to bet with Khune that he would keep Musona at bay in training.

HOW MUSONA AND KHUNE WERE RIVALS IN TRAINING

“He is one player who would replicate what he did at training. I remember how we used to bet at training that he would score a certain number of goals past Khune,” Sweswe told FARPost.

“Khune would obviously say Musona won’t score anything but myself and Tinashe Nengomasha would bet something like R500 for Musona to score. He did exactly that.

“We all know what would happen. He would win. He was so accurate so much that we knew he would score as many goals. There can only be one Musona.

Sweswe added that his presence helped Musona quickly adjust when he joined Amakhosi in 2009.

“On top of that, our presence helped him settle well. We were in a competitive team, with alot of guys who were going to the Bafana Bafana squad.

“When we went for national duty, almost 12 players would go. So the competition levels at the team made all of us work hard. Training itself was competitive just like a league game,” Sweswe said.

In 2011, Musona became the third Zimbabwean after the apartheid era to earn the DStv golden boot award when he scored 15 goals in 28 games.

Wilfred Mugeyi and Gilbert Mushangazhike had previously won the same award in 1997 and 2001 respectively.

The Al-Tai forward, Musona retired from international football in May 2022. He remains revered in Zimbabwe as the only captain that led the Warriors to three Africa Cup of Nations finals.
