Mayor addresses issue of workers’ strike during Kaizer Chiefs match

Polokwane City executive mayor John Mpe has issued a strong warning against service providers who failed to pay workers after a Kaizer Chiefs match in the City last month.

This follows an embarrassing incident of a strike by security guards who were not paid for the services rendered during a DStv Premiership match between Chiefs and Royal AM last month.

Security officers protested outside the Peter Mokaba Stadium immediately after the match. The issue dragged on for two days until Mpe and the municipality was forced to issue a formal statement. The company in question is Falaz Security Services.

With another big match expected in Polokwane between Chiefs and Golden Arrows on Sunday, Mpe has assured workers that such an incident will not happen again.

“We’ve appointed service providers whom we have contracts with. So, it was their responsibility to pay their own staff. But what we will do now is we will use our power. If you do not want to work with us, we will terminate your contract,” he told journalists.

“So, we will stick to the fact that our people deserve between because remember, when we appoint these contractors, in the heart of it is that the people of Polokwane must benefit.

“As the leaders of Polokwane, we will not tolerate whether the service provider tries to mobilise this and that. But that incident, in fact, will never happen.

“The service provider will be engaged with the view that we are willing to cut the relationship. Not paying the workers on time is a serious problem that we will not allow, so I just wanted you to understand that if workers are not happy. We are not happy.”

During the last match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Kaizer Chiefs registered over 18 000 spectators. Their clash against Arrows is expected to be no different, with the time now moved from 15:30 to 17:30.
