Another Gauteng-based club to consider Peter Mokaba Stadium as home venue

SuperSport United could be another Gauteng-based club that could find themselves taking their matches to Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

This is if the comments by Polokwane municipality Executive Mayor John Mpe is anything to go by.

Mpe has hinted that there were informal talks with some of the senior officials at SuperSport United to lure the club to Polokwane.

The municipality already have Sekhukhune United as the main team that uses the Peter Mokaba Stadium. Kaizer Chiefs have also brought three matches at the venue this season.

Marumo Gallants are as good as gone when it comes to playing at the 2010 World Cup venue.

This publication has reliably been informed that a permanent termination of the relationship could soon be formalised.

MUNICIPALITY OPEN TO WELCOMING SUPERSPORT UNITED

When asked further what he meant by the SuperSport United comments. Mpe said the doors were always open for a deal with the club.

“We had a discussion (with SuperSport United). It is a vote of confidence in the City of Polokwane more than anything else,” he said.

MORE CLUBS KEEN ON POLOKWANE

“There are clubs who are approaching us to say we would love to be associated with the City of Polokwane and to bring some of our games to the City.

“This is a good thing so we have to sit down with them and we will continue to open doors for SuperSport. As you know they had a deal with us and they would want to revisit their home,” added Mpe.

“Peter Mokaba Stadium is a home for Sekhukhune United but other clubs might come and say how do we have you as our alternative like Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport now waiting to have a discussion.

“So we will listen to what it is that they are bringing forward and what is in the best interest of people in Polokwane.”

If anything materialises from the discussions, it will not be the first time Matsatsantsa a Pitori host matches in Polokwane.

They had a partnership with the Municipality to play their matches at Peter Mokaba Stadium in 2011.
