Katlego Mashego reveals what Chiefs and Pirates need to do to match Sundowns
Retired striker Katlego Mashego has revealed what Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs need to do to keep up with Mamelodi Sundowns and return back to the pinnacle of SA football.
Mashego strongly believes that the two Soweto giants will only be able to catch Mamelodi Sundowns if they fix the way they recruit new players.
The former Pirates striker, Mashego, insists that Amakhosi and the Buccaneers need to change their recruitment strategy and policy and that shouldn’t take long, but only if the two club’s come up with a proper plan.
Mashego was speaking in an interview on SAFM SportOn on Monday night, 27 February 2023.
‘Mahoota’, as he is popularly known within the football circles, stated that the two Soweto giants should also follow in the footsteps of the Chloorkop-based outfit which also recruit players as far as South America.
HOW PIRATES AND CHIEFS CAN RETURN TO THE PINNACLE OF SA FOOTBALL
“Sundowns sign players from South America who make a difference,” said Mashego.
“They also sign the best players in South Africa who are available to anyone.
“The recruitment at both Chiefs and Pirates needs to improve. That’s why Sundowns are so far ahead.”
The ex-Bafana Ba Style forward went on to say that it is disappointing to see two of the biggest clubs in the country failing to meet the standards of Masandawana for quite some time now.
He believes that their poor recruitment strategy also affects the performance of the Bafana Bafana.
“I mean, these are two big teams in South Africa. I always say when I speak about football and Bafana Bafana, if the top five big teams are doing well it also does well for the national team,” he added.
“That’s how you get top players for the national team. If you look at history, whichever country that has won the World Cup their domestic league are dominated by the biggest clubs.
“I would say both teams [Chiefs and Pirates] need to relook at their recruitment strategy and policy so that they can get better players.”
