Saudi Arabia title race takes another twist for Pitso Mosimane

The Saudi Arabia first division title race took another twist for Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahli Saudi on Tuesday night.

On Sunday, Mosimane watched as his charges suffered his second defeat since he took over the Ahli hot seat in September 2022

They fell 2-0 loss to Al Riyadh, a result that ended their five-match unbeaten run. Their other loss was a disappointing 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Al Akhdoud at the start of February.

However, they picked themselves up and went on an incredible run that saw them assume pole position in the Saudi Arabia second tier.

On Tuesday, however, the title race swung again for Mosimane, with title challengers Al Hazem winning 2-0 against Ohod in a league match.

The win saw them move to 53 points off 25 games, just one point ahead of Mosimane’s Ahli.

The two teams have played the same number of games, with nine games before the curtain comes down on the 2022/23 season.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly mentor has been tasked to guide Ahli back to the topflight league.

SECURING PROMOTION

Tuesday’s result does not alter their chances of securing promotion to the elite league. However, it leaves them a point behind Al Hazem.

Mosimane penned a one-year deal and has done an incredible job of moving Ahli to second place thus far. He will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways when he guides his side in their next fixture.

Al Ahli welcomes the eighth-placed Al-Jabalain in Jeddah on Wednesday, 5 April 2023. Al Jabalain would be eager to win the match and draw closer to the promotion spots.

They have collected 32 points from 25 games after winning eight games and drawing eight. The other nine fixtures ended in losses for them.
