Ex-Pirates star on what Bafana Bafana need to do against Liberia

Ex-Orlando Pirates midfielder Solomon Mathe has given his thoughts on what Bafana Bafana need to do to get a positive result against Liberia on Tuesday, 28 March 2023.

The Hugo Broos side will face Liberia in a CAF AFCON qualifier match at Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium at 18:00.

This is at the back of a disappointing 2-2 draw at Orlando Stadium last Friday. A result that has put Bafana Bafana’s chances of qualification for the tournament at a huge risk.

Mathe believes tactical changes cost Broos the match in Orlando but players also need to do better in converting chances.

SOLOMON MATHE NOT IMPRESSED

“Honestly speaking, we started well, created countless chances, and then we let ourselves down. The mistake we made was the substitutions. I feel the coach made wrong decisions,” Mathe told FARPost.

“[Teboho] Mokoena was doing well as a holding midfielder, then he played him as number 10, a position he never played. The boy, Luke Le Roux, is good. But I felt he could have taken him out in the second half for Siphelele Sithole.

“The way he made his substitutions, it was like he wanted to satisfy them all because they were doing well in their teams. He shouldn’t have substituted Themba Zwane because he’s the smartest player. He made us play, created chances and his experience was helping us.”

WHAT BAFANA BAFANA NEED TO

The Uthongathi FC assistant coach has also made his feelings clear that players have not been taking the right decisions.

“Every time when we were in attack, we always had fewer numbers in the box. We are always rushing, making wrong decisions,” he said.

“Players should just make sure they convert the chances they create. We can still do a good job in Liberia. We were supposed to win that game because we created many chances.”
