Broos comments on possible consequences if Bafana fail to qualify

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has commented on the possible consequences if South Africa fails to qualify for AFCON.

South Africa are in Liberia ahead of the do-or-die CAF AFCON qualifier on Tuesday, 28 March at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium [18:00].

Broos and his Bafana troops are under pressure to deliver following the 2-2 draw in Orlando last Friday.

Bafana threw a 2-0 lead away and could have sealed the match in the first half if it was not for the plenty of missed chances.

With Bafana not in a good position, the fate of Group K could be decided on Tuesday.

A win for Liberia at home would mean South Africa have to beat Morocco at home in June. They also need to hope the Atlas Lions beat Lone Stars or don’t draw when the two nations meet in September.

CONSEQUENCES IF BAFANA BAFANA FAIL TO QUALIFY

The 70-year-old was asked during a pre-match press conference on Monday what he thinks could happen if Bafana fails to qualify.

“We will see the moment South Africa fails to qualify,” Broos told the media.

“For the moment we still have chances so we will see after that,” he said.

“[On Monday] I was relaxed and will be nervous on Tuesday. I treat this as totally normal. Even with 35 years of experience as a coach, I know Tuesday is a very important day for South Africa. We have to win to be assured of AFCON next year. So there will be normal stress and nervousness.”

HUGO BROOS REMAINS CONFIDENT

“In football, you never know but I believe that we are going to qualify for Afcon. It’s not because we had a bad second half that we can start to doubt about qualities,” added Broos.

“It was just a bad moment but we have to learn from it. So if we make the same mistakes on Tuesday then there can be a big problem. We can lose the game and it’s finished.”

Kick-off for the match is at 18:00 SA time.
