Manqoba Mngqithi attracts interest from PSL rivals

Mamelodi Sundowns senior coach Manqoba Mngqithi has attracted interest from one of the PSL rivals.

Mngqithi will see his contract at Sundowns come to an end on 30 June 2023. Although the recently crowned DStv Premiership champions have the option to extend with a further year, they are yet to do so.

With just three months before the contract expires, indications are that he will leave at the end of the season.

The 51-year-old tactician joined Masandawana in 2014 to serve as an assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane.

Mngqithi gained prominence in South African football after helping Golden Arrows win their first major trophy with a 6-0 demolishing of Ajax Cape Town in the MTN8 final in 2009.

AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu has expressed interest in roping him in as their coach in preparation for next season.

On Monday, Usuthu made technical tweaks which saw them appoint Ayanda Dlamini as interim coach while Romain Folz was redeployed as technical advisor.

“The possibility of Manqoba Mngqithi is a mouth-watering one indeed for AmaZulu,” Zungu told Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000.

“He would be no stranger to the club, having coached here before. But we must also respect the fact there’s an option on his current contract, and we must then respect his employers.”

Zungu further admitted that losing Makhehleni Makhaula to Orlando Pirates affected their rhythm.

“Our squad is probably the top three best squads in the league. And if correctly marshalled, we believe we should be competing for honours.

“Maybe the departure of [Makhehleni] Makhaula affected us, but we should still be doing better,” Zungu added.
