Banyana Banyana star eases injury fears ahead of World Cup

Banyana Banyana have been handed a boost after one of their stars eased injury fears ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Striker Jermaine Seoposenwe has revealed that her injury isn’t as bad as many feared and she should be available for selection for the global showpiece.

The WAFCON winner revealed that she had not ruptured her Achilles as initially reported, but she is suffering from “tendinitis” and would be undergoing treatment soon.

The 29-year-old striker picked up the injury while turning out for her Mexican side FC Juarez Femenil in South America.

“Regarding the rumours and articles surrounding my injury, I have not ruptured my Achilles,” Seoposenwe revealed in a statement.

“I am, however, suffering from some tendinitis. The medical staff at my team have advised me to undergo a treatment called ‘Percutaneous Micro-electrolysis’ to help with pain and facilitate healing in my tendon.

“The treatment basically requires me to not do much weight barring exercises, especially running for one week and then I’ll gradually return to play based on how I am feeling.”

Seoposenwe has made a strong impact for the Mexican side, scoring the quickest goal in the history of the Mexican Liga MX Femenil.

The Banyana star found the back of the net just nine seconds into their game against Necaxa. With that early goal in September last year, she etched her name in the history books.

“I want to get back as soon as I can because my team is at a crucial part in the season, and I would like to play my part in helping FC Juarez reach their first-ever playoff,” added Seoposenwe, who also happens to be one of the key players for Banyana coach Desiree Ellis.

Her performances were crucial in helping the team to their maiden CAF Women’s African Cup of Nations [WAFCON] title last year.

Seoposenwe is desperate to play her part at the upcoming World Cup. She will give herself the best chance to be fit and available for the showpiece.

“I am also fully aware of the World Cup on the horizon. Which is why the medical team and myself will try to navigate through this period as best we can, as to avoid a serious long-term injury.”
