Zwane attacked by Chiefs fans after loss to SuperSport
Kaizer Chiefs fans attacked coach Arthur Zwane following their 1-0 loss to SuperSport United in a DStv Premiership match at Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Saturday.
The defeat was the 11th of the current season, making it the most league losses in a single campaign in Chiefs’ PSL history.
ARTHUR ZWANE ATTACKED BY KAIZER CHIEFS FANS
According to a report by MTN FC, Zwane was hit by a flying bottle by a fan. He was subsequently cut underneath during the ugly scenes at the end of the match. Videos have surfaced on social media where Zwane had to be escorted by police to protect him from the looming violence.
AMAKHOSI FAITHFUL FRUSTRATED BY ANOTHER TROPHYLESS SEASON
The Amakhosi fans are seemingly losing patience with Zwane, who is in his first season as head coach. The club was booted out of the Nedbank Cup semifinals by rivals Orlando Pirates last weekend. It is also mathematically impossible for the club to secure either the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup spot.
According to the publication, Zwane needed treatment after the game and could not do the obligatory post-match press conference. The incident happened as the coach entered the tunnel heading towards the changing room, where supporters hung overhead.
Despite the growing frustrations from the Chiefs fans, Zwane has continuously received backing from the Chiefs management. But it remains to be seen if the 49-year-old will still enjoy support from the Amakhosi hierarchy.
During this past week, football manager Bobby Motaung was quoted as saying they would do a review at the end of the season to see if the technical team needs a beef up.
“Obviously, we’re doing a review in terms of support. We need to support them. We never put them there to fail, we put them there to develop and help them grow,” Motaung told SABC Sport.
Chiefs will take on Cape Town City in their last match of the season on Saturday, 20 May.
