Polokwane City seal promotion back to DStv Premiership

Polokwane City are the Motsepe Foundation Championship winners, sealing automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership.

Rise and Shine beat Pretoria Callies 4-0 at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After being relegated in the 2019/20 season, the Limpopo-based side regained promotion to the top flight of South Africa.

City were tied to 57 points with Cape Town Spurs Spurs and gained promotion by virtue of superior goal difference.

Meanwhile, Spurs came into the final round of the National First Division with an advantage to gain promotion to the Premier Soccer League after claiming maximum points last weekend.

However, Shaun Bartlett’s troops suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss against University of Pretoria.

The Capetonians beat NB La Masia 2-1 at Dobsonville Stadium in the penultimate round to move top of the Premiership table with 56 points.

Spurs needed to collect maximum points against AmaTuks to seal promotion, irrespective of how the chasing pack of Polokwane City and Casric Stars played. City and Stars came into the last round of fixtures trailing Spurs with one and two points, respectively.
