Mhlongo takes swipe at Swallows after Plk City promotion

Joseph Mhlongo has taken a swipe at his former club Swallows FC after Polokwane City’s promotion to the DStv Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

Rise and Shine gained automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership after hammering Pretoria Callies 4-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, in Polokwane.

As a result, the victory saw City finish top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship with 57 points, equal on points with second-placed Cape Town Spurs.

But Duncan Lechesa’s side were crowned champions as they had a better goal difference.

However, Mhlongo was quick to take a swipe at the Dube Birds, a team that released him last campaign after helping them retain their PSL status.

JOSEPH MHLONGO: ‘I WAS RELEASED AFTER FIGHTING SO HARD FOR THEM’

The 32-year-old footballer was full of praise to God for giving him another chance to showcase his talent. The player felt like he was hard done by his former club when they decided to release him last term.

“Look, it’s very emotional, last season I was released [at Swallows] after fighting so hard to keep them in the DStv Premiership,” said Mhlongo after their final game of the season.

“Sometimes setbacks are not the end of the World. Here I am today promoting another team. It’s all God’s grace.

“I thank God for giving me another chance to fight for myself.”

JOSEPH MHLONGO: ‘OUR LIVES DEPENDED ON IT’

Mhlongo went on to reveal that their lives depended on the win because that was the only way they could gain promotion to the top flight.

“We had to focus on the game because, at the end of the day, we had to win our game. What happened in other games wasn’t in our hands. With God’s grace, other teams didn’t win and we got the promotion,” he added.

“We motivated ourselves coming into this game. This was because at the end of the day, it’s our lives. And we didn’t need much motivation from the management or other people.

“You cannot change what God has written in his books. I’m just glad that I was part of the group that got the promotion.”
