How ‘disappointed’ Cape Town Spurs intend to pick up the pieces

After missing out on automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership, Cape Town Spurs are hoping to pick up the pieces and “move on.”

Shaun Bartlett’s charges came agonizingly close to sealing automatic promotion to the land of milk and honey.

However, a final day capitulation against the University of Pretoria stopped the Cape outfit dead in their tracks.

HOW CAPE TOWN SPURS MISSED OUT ON PROMOTION

They headed into their final match needing to win to secure the Motsepe Foundation Championship and promotion to the top flight.

But they could not get the better of the Tshwane outfit who held them to what was a costly 1-1 draw at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou expressed the club’s disappointment at missing out on automatic promotion but promised they will continue to fight in the looming playoffs.

“We are disappointed,” said Efstathiou is a statement.

“We will pick ourselves up, regroup and move on. Our goal is still in our hands.

“Its been a season with twists and turns, this is just another one. We believe in our team and we know they will fight till the end.”

NOT ALL IS LOST FOR CAPE TOWN SPURS

Spurs will now hope to return to the Premiership through the promotion/relegation playoffs. In the playoffs, they will face Casric Stars and the top-flight’s second-from-bottom side.

Casric Stars finished third in the Championship and will also hope to make the most out of their second chance to reach the big time.

In the Premiership, the battle to avoid the drop is still on between Maritzburg United, Chippa United, Marumo Gallants and Richards Bay.

Maritzburg could meet their fate on Tuesday when they face champions Mamelodi Sundowns in their final match at Loftus Versfeld.
