Ayanda Dlamini reflects on AmaZulu’s irksome season

Reflecting on the season to forget that they have had, AmaZulu FC interim head coach Ayanda Dlamini has pointed out where they let themselves down.

Dlamini only joined Usuthu first team as an assistant coach in October when Romain Folz was appointed as the head coach, replacing Brandon Truter.

Usuthu’s first round of the campaign wasn’t that bad as they even reached the MTN8 final. They were close to ending a 30-year trophy drought but only to lose with a narrow 1-0 scoreline to Orlando Pirates.

Dlamini says in January, they played most of their league games at home but failed to collect as many points as they could. According to him, that is where they dropped the ball.

“Look, to be honest, I think we let ourselves down along the way,” said Dlamini.

“Like I’ve always said, I think there are games where we really had to take three points but we would end up taking a draw or losing the game.

“That’s the only thing I can say that has let us down. I think we deserve more points than what we have today.

“If I can go back, you play against Kaizer Chiefs and you win 4-0. And the following week, you play at home again, you play 1-1. I think the whole of January, we played at home, we didn’t take advantage of that, playing at home, we didn’t collect the points that we needed.

“So, I think that’s where we left ourselves down.”

AmaZulu currently occupy the 12th spot on the log standings with 33 points after 29 games. With one game to go before the season ends, the KZN side is no longer in danger of relegation.

However, they have also missed an opportunity to finish the season within the top eight. On the last matchday of the season, Saturday, 20 May, they will host the Buccaneers at the Moses Mabhida Stadium at 2 pm.
