CT City complete league double over Chiefs, Gallants relegated

Cape Town City have completed a league double over Kaizer Chiefs this campaign with a 1-0 victory in a DStv Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

This was both sides’ final match of the season, with the visitors looking bright in the early stages of the contest as they were searching for an opener.

However, Amakhosi improved as the half wore on but were unable to find a breakthrough against the resilient Cape side.

But, Eric Tinkler‘s boys broke the deadlock just eight minutes into the showdown through Mduduzi Mdantsane.

The Soweto giants tried to pull one back, but luck was not on their side.

In the 31st minute of the match, City were reduced to 10 men after Taariq Fielies was shown a red card.

Back out for the remaining 45 minutes, the showpiece got off to a cagey start, as two teams hardly found any real momentum.

As the second stanza progressed, Arthur Zwane’s charges piled pressure on the visitors – taking control of proceedings, but largely failing to break down City’s back four.

The Glamour Boys needed something to lift the tension as time was running out of their favour. The signs were encouraging with Amakhosi growing increasingly into the match – searching for an equaliser. However, it was never meant to be.

The contest slowed down a bit as the half drew on, with City finding it difficult to settle into a rhythm and prolonged ball possession from Chiefs.

City’s relentless way of doing things in the field of play denied Zwane’s charges time and space on the ball.

The final whistle blew, and it sealed a deserved win for Tinkler’s men, who fought hard throughout the game.

Chiefs played the majority of the match with an extra man. But the Soweto giants side failed to use their numerical advantage wisely.

Meanwhile, in another fixture, Marumo Gallants are relegated from the top flight after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Swallows FC.
