City boss responds to Craig Martin’s homecoming claims

Cape Town City FC chairman John Comitis has responded to claims that Craig Martin, currently at Orlando Pirates, is returning to the Citizens.

Martin’s future has been the subject of intense speculation, with reports in the media speculating that he is on his way back to CT City after enduring a difficult start following his move to Pirates.

Without giving much away John Comitis ruled out Martin’s return to CT City following recent reports linking the wingback with the club

The 30-year-old has also been struggling for game-time at Pirates. He only featured in only five appearances in the DStv Premiership last season. He has also been left out of the match-day squad on 15 occasions.

Martin’s former boss, Comitis has denied claims that the player, could potentially return home and sign with ex-club CT City.

“There is nothing like that, I am not talking to anyone at Orlando Pirates right now,” Comitis claimed.

Martin joined Orlando Pirates in January and has failed in impressing the Spanish tactician, just like the veteran Ndumiso Mabena.

The flying wingback Martin signed on the dotted line today for a two-and-a-half season deal.

However, it is said that he may not be part of Jose Riveiro’s plans anymore. The club will back the coach’s preferences, especially after winning two trophies, MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, in his first season.

There is a huge chance that Martin could be released by the Buccaneers ahead of the new season, after initially looking for a potential loan deal.

An obvious destination would be a homecoming to CT City, a team that made him a full professional.

The speedster had been on the Sea Robbers’ wish list for a while. It is believed that an official that is no longer with the club played a huge role in bringing him to the Soweto giants.

Martin broke into the topflight with City back in 2017 under Manchester United Strikers coach, Benni McCarthy.

The defender went on to make more than 100 appearances for the Cape Town-based outfit.

He sought greener pastures and tried to unseat Thabiso Monyane and Bandile Shandu for a starting berth. But even Paseka Mako, a traditional left-back, was higher in the pecking order for the right-back position.
