Swallows offer ex-Chiefs man new deal as Stellenbosch FC hover

Swallows FC have offered former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi a new deal as Stellenbosch FC hover.

Akpeyi spent the second half of the season at The Birds as they finished the season strongly.

Under the tutelage of caretaker coach Musa Nyatama, youthful Swallows defied the odds and finished eighth in the just-ended 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.

The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder had taken over when the team was in 14th place.

SWALLOWS OFFER DANIEL AKPEYI NEW DEAL

The Nigeria international, Akpeyi, featured in eight games and kept five clean sheets. Some of his starts came after Nyatama had taken over following the abrupt departure of Ernst Middendorp.

According to a source, Swallows have offered the Super Eagles goalie a new deal.

“The agreement was that he would play for the remainder of the season, after which the club would make a decision.

“He’s done extremely well. There is a sense that he’s a good, experienced footballer to have in his dressing room.

“He’s also enjoyed the environment and is open to staying on. But obviously, it will depend on whether they agree on the new offer tabled by the club.

“But there’s also been interest from Stellenbosch FC,” the source told FARPost.

REGARDS NYATAMA HIGHLY

In a previous interview, Akpeyi has spoken highly of Nyatama, who will be a substantive coach next season.

The club’s chairman David Mogashoa recently confirmed his permanent appointment.

“Coach Musa is a very humble and hard-working person. He takes his job seriously. I’m surprised that in a short period of time, he started coaching.

“He has learnt so much, he wants to carry everybody along so well and tries to put in discipline,” he said.

“If I have a chance to remain at Swallows, I still hope that the mindset is to compete for the new season.”
