SA coach miss out on promotion with Belgian side

South African-born coach Masilo Modubi came close to securing promotion with his Belgian side KESK Leopoldsburg but lost out in the playoffs.

Modubi has ventured into coaching since retiring from playing in 2015. He spent 12 seasons playing in Belgium, seven at Westerlo and three at Dessel Sport.

The tactician has been in charge of the third-tier team since 2017 after having previously been in charge of various youth teams.

Speaking to FARPost from Belgium on Friday, Modubi said he was pleased with the progress and impact he has made at the club.

The club qualified for the promotion playoffs after winning the first of the three quarters in their league. But they lost out in the playoffs after finishing in position eight.

“We had a good season, this is what we have been building for the past two years,” said Modubi.

MASILO MODUBI’S COACHING JOURNEY SO FAR

“The first time when I started; obviously there was a bit of doubt. But you have the respect as a player that you played for Chelsea or teams at pro-level.

“At first it was challenging because I am also a foreigner. Not forgetting the colour of my skin. So the most important thing for me was to prove to people that I have the qualities,” added the former Bafana Bafana player.

There has been rumours that two clubs in the PSL have inquired to lure Modubi back to South Africa. But the former Chelsea midfielder says while no one has reached out to him, his only focus is getting better as a coach.

“I would not say anything about that especially because you have to respect other people involved. If there is any truth to that, but I know nothing about that,” he said.

“Even if I was talking to any team I don’t think I would have said anything. I have heard people talking about links with some teams. But at this moment I am here and have no contract with anyone else.”

ON ANY PROSPECT OF AN IMMEDIATE RETURN TO COACH IN SOUTH AFRICA

“I am only focusing on becoming a coach and this is something I have become passionate about. I invest a lot of time to become better as a coach and have never thought of being part of any coaching staff, especially back at home. Even here, my only focus is just being a coach and just trying to see how far I can go.”
