Sekhukhune close in on the highly-rated overseas star

DStv Premiership side Sekhukhune United are closing in on a highly rated overseas-based star as they gear up for the 2023/24 season.

Babina Noko had an impressive 2022/23 DStv Premiership season despite a poor start under Kaitano Tembo.

Brandon Truter, who took over from Tembo as head coach, guided them to a seventh-place finish.

STRENGTHENING THE SQUAD

He also took them to their first cup final – Nedbank Cup – where they lost 2-1 to Orlando Pirates.

By virtue of being losing finalists in the Nedbank Cup, they will represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

The winners – Pirates – will play in the CAF Champions League after finishing as DStv Premiership runners-up.

Sekhukhune are going all out in the market to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

Babina Noko have already retained the services of two veteran midfielders who were instrumental in the impressive Nedbank Cup run.

Kamohelo Mokotjo and Sibusiso Vilakazi will stay on at Sekhukhune United beyond the expiry of their contracts on 30 June.

FARPost can reveal that they are closing in on a highly rated overseas-based star. Yanga Baliso arrived in Cape Town this week, with talks set for Wednesday.

The Orlando Pirates academy graduate is keen on returning home, according to a source close to him.

“He wants to come back home and will explore his options with his agent,” the source told FARPost.

The 26-year-old has played for IFK Mariehamn and Finnish club Pargas IF. The former Ajax Cape Town linkman’s most recent club is AC Oulu in Finland’s topflight Veikkausliiga.

He featured in 15 games for his club this season in different roles, including central defensive midfielder. The Cape Town-born star has provided one assist so far.

Indications are that he has terminated his contract with the Finnish and will be coming in as a free agent.

Baliso is a versatile player who is good with the ball at his feet and knows how to progress the game both by pressing and passing.

He is credited for his quick feet, endurance, and not shying away from duels.
