Daniel Akpeyi reveals Chiefs coaches that improved his game

Former Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper Daniel Akpeyi has revealed the coaches that improved his game during his stay at the Soweto giants.

Akpeyi spent three seasons at Amakhosi, having joined them in the 2018/19 season from Chippa United

The Nigerian goalkeeper left the Glamour Boys when his contract expired on 30 June 2022.

He featured 69 times in his three-year stay at Chiefs, conceding 61 goals and keeping 27 clean sheets.

Since joining Chiefs, Akpeyi worked under Ernest Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, Stuart Baxter and Arthur Zwane when Baxter was shown the exit door.

Speaking to FARPost, Akpeyi revealed what it has been like to represent one of the biggest clubs in South Africa under the mentors mentioned above during his time at Chiefs.

DANIEL AKPEYI: “I HAVE LEARNED A LOT AT CHIEFS”

“It’s great to be a Kaizer Chiefs player because there’s a lot I learned and achieved from there [mentally and physically included], Akpeyi told this publication.

“The coaches I played under, actually improved my game a lot. I was able to adjust to the atmosphere and the supporters.”

The 36-year-old goal-minder went on to state that his experience with the Nigerian national team helped him a lot to settle at Naturena.

“Looking at where I come from in  Nigeria, the supporters are similar to the Kaizer Chiefs fans. They can be aggressive sometimes, so I was used to that atmosphere. When things are not going well, you have to take those waters on your body, the insult, and whatsoever.

“Though, it wasn’t easy at some point and time. I felt like the credit wasn’t coming the way it should have. But I had to understand I’m at a different place,” he added.

As reported by FARPost a fortnight ago, Akpeyi was offered a new deal by Swallows FC. This comes after he helped the side finish in the top eight of the DStv Premiership.

Last campaign, the highly-rated goalie played eight games for the Dube Birds and kept five clean sheets in the process.
