CT Spurs secure DStv Prem promotion, Maritzburg relegated
Cape Town Spurs have secured promotion to the DStv Premiership after their 0-0 draw with Maritzburg United in the PSL Promotional Playoffs at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.
Maritzburg came into this game needing a win to retain their DStv Premiership status, whereas CT Spurs only need a draw to gain promotion.
However, the Team of Choice failed to do what was expected of them to retain their top-flight status in the final match of the PSL Promotional Playoffs on their own turf.
Maritzburg dominated the majority of the first half as they searched for an opener, however, they couldn’t pass Spurs’ solid defence.
LEVEL AT THE BREAK
Both sides had to settle for a 0-0 scoreline at the half-time break.
Back out for the remaining half, the Blue Army piled pressure on the visitors – taking control of proceedings but largely failing to break down the Cape side’s back four.
As the second stanza progressed, the hosts continued to create more clear-cut chances to prevail over the Urban Warriors.
The KwaZulu-Natal side were guilty of wasteful finishing as they failed to break the deadlock despite several half chances.
But the unfazed visitors, on the other hand, tried to be the better side, but the hosts stood their ground.
The home side regained their momentum and kept on frightening the life out of the Cape club, with the game coming to an end.
CAPE TOWN SPURS SECURE PROMOTION
The showpiece calmed down a bit as the second stanza drew on. Although, Maritzburg were still finding it difficult to settle into a rhythm and prolonged ball possession. This was due to the relentless way of Spurs as they were denying them time and space on the ball.
Spurs put on a fanatic defensive show of class to force a draw. As Maritzburg tried their all to find a goal, which was never meant to be.
In the end, it was Shaun Bartlett’s side who claimed all valuable three points away from home. Spurs finished top of the mini PSL promotional play-offs table with 10 points.
