Cape Town Spurs issues warning to DStv Prem clubs

Cape Town Spurs chairman Ari Efstathiou has issued a stern warning to DStv Premiership clubs looking to raid his club for players.

CT Spurs regained promotion to the top flight after overpowering Maritzburg United and Casric Stars in the PSL Promotion/Relegation playoffs.

The Cape Town-based outfit came into the last game of the playoffs against Maritzburg looking for only one point to gain promotion.

And they succeed as the Shaun Bartlett-coached club played to a goalless draw against the Team of Choice on Wednesday, 13 June at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Meanwhile, CT Spurs promotion meant that Maritzburg is relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

With the Urban Warriors impressing in the just-ended National First Division campaign, it was inevitable that their players will attract interest from different Premiership clubs.

The chairman of the club has however warned the teams who are looking to lure their players away from the team.

Amongst players who has attracted interest from clubs in the Premiership is Ashley Cupido. The attacker scored 15 in the NFD last season.

“There’s no player who’s going anywhere, I’m sure a lot of teams want our players,” said Efstathiou.

“We’ve got to stabilise our team and make sure everything is good to stay in the DStv Premiership.

“Cape Town Spurs is big institution with 53 years. We have a phenomenal support base which is starting to come out now.

“When we formed Ajax Cape Town, they[supporters] felt their home club took a backseat. To be honest I think the move back to Cape Town Spurs will pay off,” added the chairman.

Meanwhile, Cape Town Spurs join Polokwane City who gained automatic promotion to the elite league. PLk City won the Motsepe Foundation Championship title.
