Gauteng club close to signing Stellenbosch FC defender Vusi Sibiya

A Gauteng club is close to signing Stellenbosch FC defender Vusi Sibiya who spent the last season with the Cape Town outfit.

The highly-rated defender joined Stellies at the start of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season after parting company with Baroka FC.

Following Baroka’s relegation, Sibiya and the club agreed on a mutual termination, allowing him to move to the Winelands club.

VUSI SIBIYA CLOSE TO GAUTENG SWITCH

His arrival at Stellies was warmly welcomed as he replaced Zitha Kwinika, who had joined Kaizer Chiefs.

He made 24 starts for Stellies in all competitions and was on the bench on two occasions during the 2022/23 season.

And now, he could be set for a switch to a Gauteng club ahead of the new season. TwoFARPost sources have told this publication that SuperSport United are closing in on him as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the new season.

Matsatsantsa will have a jam-packed season with CAF Confederation Cup football in the picture after they finished third.

They have already signed Siphesihle Ndlovu on a permanent deal, and they are also looking to keep Grant Margeman.

Phathutshedzo Nange has also joined the club after leaving Chiefs following the expiry of his contract.

Having lost Thatayaone Ditlhokwe to Chiefs, bringing in a defender of Sibiya’s quality makes sense.

When contacted for comment by FARPost, the 29-year-old was reluctant to talk about his future. “This is not the right time to talk. Maybe next week. I can’t talk about anything right now,” the former Baroka FC centre-back said.

OPEN TO LETTING HIM GO

However, a source close to him told this publication that he was indeed close to switching to the Gavin Hunt-coached side.

“It’s highly likely that they will conclude with him anytime soon. Stellenbosch were open to letting him go, and he’s keen to come to Gauteng,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Stellies are also keen to bring in Ismael Olivier Toure, who had an impressive campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup.

He was part of the Marumo Gallants team that reached the competition’s semi-final.

The Ivorian featured in 12 interclub competition matches and would bring a wealth of experience to the relatively young Stellenbosch side.

While he has a year left on his contract at Gallants, the relegated club know they cannot keep him in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
