Botswana international on the radar of two SA clubs

A Botswana international is on the radar of two South African clubs Pretoria Callies and newly promoted Cape Town Spurs.

With the transfer window officially open, clubs are intensifying their pursuit of their targets.

And the two aforementioned clubs have taken their search for a central midfielder across the border.

The player who has caught their attention is the dynamic Zebras central midfielder Mothusi Cooper.

FARPost sources in Botswana revealed that Callies watched him in action for Gaborone United a fortnight ago.

He inspired Gaborone United as they were crowned Orange FA Cup winners for the second time in row after edging Security Systems XI 2-1 in the final played at Gaborone national stadium.

On the day, he was named man of the match, catching the eye of Callies’ representatives.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship side Callies is said to have tabled an offer for the talented midfielder after that game.

“Callies sent someone to come and watch him when he played the Orange FA Cup final.

“They’re obviously considering him. But there’s also Cape Town Spurs who are interested in him,” a source said.

Cooper’s contract with Gaborone United came to an end last month and indications are that he is yet to sign a new one.

“He wants to see if the SA move will materialise especially the one to Spurs. He really wants to play in the DStv Premiership.

“When he joined GU, the club owner agreed he would not stand in his way if he got an opportunity outside Botswana.”

Cooper has previously been on the wanted list of SuperSport United but the move never materialised.

LIKENED TO JOHN MOETI

Cooper has been likened to the late former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana midfielder John Moeti.

The comparison is due to his robustness, tactical awareness, mental strength and the ability to string pin point passes.

The 25-year-old is credited for being a good reader of the game, tough tackles and never committing himself too easily.

Capable of taking on defenders, the pint-sized midfielder often thrives when handed a free role, roaming behind the frontline.

He has previously had stints in Zambia where he turned out for Power Dynamos and in Morocco were had a stint with Botola 1 side.

Cooper is a vital cog in the Zebras, having enjoyed over 20 caps so far.
