Mamelodi Sundowns’ second signing confirmed

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed their second signing of the transfer window as they prepare for the 2023/24 season.

Stellenbosch FC and Sundowns have confirmed the transfer of Argentinian midfielder Junior Mendieta to the DStv Premiership champions.

The 30-year-old leaves the Winelands side after three seasons at the club. The former Club Atletico Los Andes scored 15 goals and provided 15 assists in over 70 appearances in all competitions.

MENDIETA IS SUNDOWNS’ SECOND SIGNING

“Stellenbosch Football Club can confirm that an agreement has been reached with reigning DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns for the transfer of Júnior Mendieta,” reads Stellenbosch’s statement.

“The Argentine midfielder departs after three seasons in Stellenbosch where he scored 15 goals in 79 appearances across all competitions, including a joint-club-record 14 goals in the DStv Premiership.

“Mendieta quickly established himself as a fan-favourite during his stay in the Cape Winelands as a result of his tenacity, ability on the ball, and goal-scoring acumen, all of which aided the club’s cause on the pitch in recent times.

“The 30-year-old was instrumental in Stellenbosch achieving a club-record fourth-place finish in the league during the 2021/22 campaign and featured prominently to help fire the team to a first Nedbank Cup semi-final last season.

MENDIETA’S THANK YOU TO THE STELLENBOSCH SUPPORTERS

‘Thank you for the opportunity and the love that you have given me all these years.’ Mendieta wrote in an open letter to the club’s supporters on Wednesday.

‘I think I’ve done my job very well. I’ve always given my best, and that leaves me at ease. I’ll always carry Stellenbosch in my heart and be grateful for the love and affection they gave my family and me.’

Mendieta is the Brazilians’ second signing after they recently unveiled Lesiba Nku who joined from Marumo Gallants.

“The club would like to thank Mendieta for his dedicated service and wish him all of the best in the next stage of his career,” concluded the statement.
